Venice — Places to See

The Rialto Bridge

Known as Ponte di Rialto — nearly 850 years of history.

Back to Places to See in Venice

The first dry crossing of the Grand Canal was a pontoon bridge built in 1178, replaced by a wooden bridge in 1255 due to increased traffic, and eventually rebuilt in the stone form still standing today. The first crossing here was a pontoon bridge built in 1178; after several wooden versions collapsed or burned, the stone bridge seen today was designed by Antonio da Ponte and completed in 1591.
